Political Cartoon #6

Tom Tole's cartoon ridicules those who reject the fact that the climate has been altered by using a caricature of a man wearing a shirt that says, "Climate change denier," and falling through the ice of "winter 2012) that has broken and probably also melted. Toles means to say that of course the climate is changing, and there must be a concrete and rational answer to explain it. Ignoring it won't help anyone.

Senior Year.

I guess I'm kind of old now. It's weird to think that I'm a registered voter and finished applying to colleges. Colleges. Not 13th grade. I feel like I'll just be back here in Herndon next year, but I know this will be the end. It's definitely sad that I won't be living with my family anymore but thrilling to think that it's almost time to make my life truly mine, and mine alone. This has easily been my most stressful and academically demanding year, but I have also had a lot of fun, and I'm enjoying myself and the people I've met. Government class is usually really entertaining but often disconcerting. We have a lot of fixing to do, as a country. That's okay though. I'd much rather know than live in ignorance.

Political Cartoon #5

Mitt Romney recently got in trouble for his comment about how much he likes firing people, which is sort of a scary and vindictive thing to say for a potential future president. He has links with big companies that exist solely to fire employees and sell out other companies, and that is to what the cartoon is referring. It uses a caricature of a small, "every millionaire," (rather than everyman) with a "1%" badge, to represent Romney's connection to wealthy Americans. The cartoonist, Tom Toles, views this situation cynically and depicts Romney as being kind of an imbecile.

The next Republican candidate...

Although the Republicans have done their very best to be inadequate candidates for the next world leader, one of them will eventually be the chosen one to face off the unloved incumbent, Barack Obama. My best guess is that because Mitt Romney was announced as the winner of the Iowa caucuses and has been ahead in other polls, he will be the winner of the primaries. Though Romney has unappealing connections with big businesses and isn't the most dynamic personality, he is the least unappealing to Republican voters. While Huntsman is the most moderate and would probably be the most successful against Obama, who is in danger of losing many Democratic votes in the upcoming election, he has very few followers in his own party. Gingrich is ridiculous and smarmy and unlikely to have any real weight in this election. Romney will be the one.
